7 Health Benefits of Coffee

The 28th September is the world’s biggest coffee morning in aid of Macmillan cancer support.

Macmillan ask people all over the UK to hold coffee mornings selling cakes and coffee with friends, family and co-workers to raise money for the Macmillan charity.

Why Coffee Mornings?

Macmillan supports individuals going through cancer treatment, their families and carers. The idea to hold coffee mornings started way back in 1990 as just a small affair, yet it has been incredibly successful and grown over the years. Just last year, Macmillan raised over £27 million through coffee morning donations, and they’re hoping to do just as well this year!

So Why Don’t You Join In!?

Here are some reasons to get involved, as we look at the benefits of drinking coffee:

  • Coffee is a Great Source of Fibre
    Each cup of coffee contains roughly 1.8 grams of fibre per cup. The recommended daily amount is 20-38 grams of fibre; so that’s a good excuse to have a couple!
  • Lowers Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
    Research conducted by Harvard, found the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes decreased by 9% for each daily cup of coffee consumed. Decaffeinated coffee decreased risk by 6% per cup.
  • Source of Antioxidants
    Antioxidants are great for our bodies, but not many people know that coffee is actually a better source of antioxidants than a serving of blueberries, raspberries or oranges.
  • Good for the Liver
    Coffee has been shown in research to protect against cirrhosis of the liver and reduce the risk of developing liver cancer.
  • Lower Risk of Alzheimer’s
    Coffee drinkers are reportedly up to 65% less at risk of developing Alzheimer’s and Dementia than non-coffee drinkers.
  • Protection against Parkinson’s
    Again, coffee drinkers are reportedly 30-60% less at risk of developing Parkinson’s. However, these findings only show this effect with standard coffee, not decaffeinated, which offered no lower risks.
  • Essential Nutrients in Coffee
    Another great benefit of coffee is that it contains vitamins B2, B5 and B3; Manganese and Potassium. Despite small amounts, each cup adds up!
