Is Eating Vegan Better For Your Health?

Vegans do not eat or use products that have come from an animal or any animal by-products like milk, eggs or gelatine. Vegans would also not purchase leather or furs.

A vegan diet is mostly made up of vegetables, grains, nuts, pulses, fruits and other plant-based foods. There are also many substitute foods available, such as tofu or Quorn, as well as many dairy products made from soy or nuts.

What are the Health Benefits?

Veganism is considered a healthy diet because the foods they can consume are primarily vegetables and fruits. Most vegans consume “five a day” thanks to a heavy vegetable-based diet. In addition to this, Vegans consume nut and soy-based proteins too. Statistically, Vegans do have a lower BMI than those eating other diets. A high BMI is linked to a lot of health problems including strokes, heart disease, osteoporosis and even cancer.

Compared to the average British diet, Veganism can usually be considered a healthy alternative. The average British person consumes too much sugar, salt and saturated fats, and does not get enough vitamins. However, sugar, salt and fats are still allowed within a Vegan diet; you do not have to eat healthily to be a Vegan. There are many unhealthy foods such as chips, crisps and vegan fast foods.

What Diet Should I Be Eating?

A balanced diet. You should aim to eat a healthy balanced diet rich in vegetables and fruits, being vegan or vegetarian is not necessary to eat healthily. But try to stay away from excessive amounts of saturated fats, sugars and salts, as they are more harmful to your health than most meat is.

Make sure if you do decide to follow a vegan diet that you ensure to eat a balanced diet of not just fruit and vegetables, but lots of protein, iron and nutrients essential to healthy living.
